Directions

  1. Heat your grill. Works on a cold grill but better on a hot one.
  2. Select a side. Logo up - general scraping, down - tougher spots.
  3. Hold properly: Center 2 fingers on top to distribute pressure.
  4. Scrape. Find a good angle. Turn sideways to reach grate's sides.
  5. Steam. Dip quickly in water. Apply for a more hygienic clean.
  6. Season. Dip in oil. Apply for a non-stick cooking surface.
  7. Grill. Enjoy grilling - you have clean and safe grates.
  8. Dispose. Recycle, compost or use as kindling.
  9. Eat. Spend time with friends and family, not cleaning your brush.
  10. Repeat. Grab a fresh or refurbished Scrappy!

Finally a scraper that I don't hate. I've spent a fortune on brushes and always end up disappointed. This scraped well and I especially appreciated the steam cleaning. - JS

Have questions? We've got answers.

Scrape

Scrape grill with a Scrappy Scraper. Make sure to experiment with different angles, turn it sideways to clean the sides of the grates, and use black side down for stubborn bits.

Start scraping

Steam clean

Quickly dip in water (no need to soak, it breaks down the cardboard too much) and spread in a scraping motion. Watch the water steam clean and sanitize your grates.

Start steaming

Season

Dip scraper into vegetable oil (olive oil will burn because of it's lower heat index) and spread evenly to create a non-stick surface. This will help prevent food from sticking.

Start seasoning

FAQs

Does it work?

Yes it works! Most people are skeptical at first but quickly become Scrappy converts. The cardboard is stronger and thicker than you think and was chosen and designed for maximum effectiveness.

Is cardboard strong enough?

Yes. It's strong enough to clean your grates. Is it designed to resuscitate a grill with a lifetime of grime and neglect? Probably not, but for everyday cleaning, it works wonders. Even though we chose the most rigid cardboard we could find, if you push down too hard, of course it will buckle. But one or two scrapes and you'll get the feel for how hard you can push.

How does it compare to a metal brush?

From a versatility and safety POV, it kicks metal brushes into next year. From a performance POV, it scrapes 98% as well. Only the really really caked on bits need more than steam cleaning to remove. But stay tuned, we have something in the works to address the other 2%!

How do I dispose a used Scrappy

Scrappy Scrapers are made from 100% recycled materials and are biodegradable.

To discard:

  • Compost it in your green bin
  • Cut off the greasy end and recycle

Can I make my own?

Well yes, and no. The idea was born when a cardboard paper towel tube was used instead of a missing brush so any cardboard works, but it doesn't have the rigidity to really get your BBQ clean. We spent many hours on R&D to find a cardboard that performed all the tasks we knew were important to you (and many others you didn't even know you wanted or needed).

Does bacteria burn off?

Absolutely, but it doesn't burn it off your brush.

You wouldn't clean your pans with a dirty scrubber, so why would you clean your BBQ with one? A clean scraper reduces the risk of food being contaminated.

Not all BBQs are enclosed grill and the temperature isn't guaranteed to be sufficient. Very few people measure the temperature of their meat before serving so it's better to be safe than sorry.

Can I use it on public grates?

Absolutely! One of the biggest advantages of a Scrappy Scraper is that it's disposable. Use it at the park, the campsite or tailgating at the game, just dispose of it once you're done. No wrapping a gross brush in plastic or foregoing cleaning the grates altogether.
